Toba lake itself is a volcanic lake that occurs when there is a volcanic eruption at 69000-77000 years ago, is also expected to be one the largest volcanic explosions in the world.
After the blast, creating kaledra (hollows in the ground after the volcanic eruption) which is then filled with water and we know now as Lake Toba.
